New taro germplasm accessions, Philippines

Philippines has collected new taro accessions from various localities across the country
47 new taro accessions have been collected from different localities and these have been encoded in the National Plant Genetic Resources Laboratory (NPGRL) multi-crop database systems of PHLGRIS. The localities where the accessions were collected:
  • Oriental Mindoro (16)
  • Albay (12)
  • Camarines Sur (2)
  • Laguna (3)
  • Cavite (5)
  • Quezon Province (7)
 

Morphological characterization of germplasm accessions

The team also worked on morphological characterization of germplasm accessions conserved at NPGRL in early January 2021 and almost two thirds were characterised from plant growth habit to inflorescence traits. About half were characterized up to root and corm data.

Observed pests and diseases in NPGRL taro genebank field
Diseases and insects in the field like taro leaf blight, cutworm and Sphingid caterpillar were observed and confirmed by Institute of Plant Breeding's pathologist and entomologist. Some images are shown below:
