Latest updates on project activities from the Philippines for the month of April 2022

Activities carried out:

The project team conducted face-to-face meetings and site visits on Aurora (March 30 – April 2, 2022), Bicol (April 5 – April 8, 2022), and Quezon Province (April 19, 2022) for the conduct and implementation of CFS, CFG and demo farms.
  • Identification of sites for Conservation Field School (CFS) - the project team has identified Quezon province (Danlagan, Batis) as sites for Conservation Field School
  • Demo farms and Community Field Genebank (CFG) - The project team has identified Bula and San Luis, Aurora as demo farm sites. Quezon province, Deloverges Farms and Calapan (for confirmation) were identified as CFG sites
  • Taro Field Genebank in the Central State Bicol University of Agriculture (CBSUA) - During the meeting with CBSUA, it was discussed that the Taro Center, headed by Dr. Allan B. Del Rosario, will be a Taro Field Genebank for accessions in the Bicol Region
  • Production of Proceeding and Training Modules - The project team is currently writing and producing the proceedings and training modules for the participants of the TOT
  • Good Agricultural Practices - The project team is currently conducting an experiment on Good Agricultural Practices of Taro in the Philippines using three varieties: GB 59727(promising accession), GB 55342, and PHL 33224)
  • Characterization of taro - Currently, the project team has completely characterized 106/143 taro accessions and 37 are yet to be fully characterized from previously planted accessions. Additionally, there are 18 newly planted accessions in the demo area, 16 newly collected accessions from Bicol, and 3 from Quezon
  • Exchange of germplasm of taro - plant quarantine documents are in process; exchange of materials between MARDI and NPGRL; planting materials in sub-culture;pending DHL account
  • National Webinar Series on taro - Preliminary communication and possible collaboration with CBSUA was established during the project team’s face-to-face meeting with CBSUA
